Read a Movie

FCPL’s newest adult book club, Read a Book, is for fans of great stories and great films.  Our premier selection is Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones which we will view and discuss next month at the library on Post Road.

The supernatural drama is narrated by a fourteen-year-old murder victim from a place she calls The Inbetween.    It is truly a one-of-kind story that contains both hope and heartache as the young Susie Salmon encounters kindred spirits while observing her loved ones in grief and her killer as he draws their suspicions.

The 2009 film has a remarkable cast that includes Susan Sarandon, Mark Walhberg and Stanley Tucci under the direction of Peter Jackson.

We hope you can join us October 9 for the film and October 16 for a discussion of the novel.  Both events will take place at 10:30 am in the meeting room of the Post Road Library.

Do you currently have a valid will?

Only 44% of adults surveyed do, even though most of us have good intentions about making one.  I had made my own simple will using the Nolo Quick & Legal Will Book several years ago, and I needed to update it.  Even so, there is something about this project that brings out the procrastinator in me.  After I checked the book out, I always seemed to have other projects that needed to be done first.  I ended up renewing the book twice, and actually finishing the will the night before the book was finally due.

Nolo books are all written in clear, easy to understand language with plenty of examples.  The book comes with a disc that opens in any word processing software.  You just fill in what you need.  I finally did get it done, and I’ll find a notary this week so I can have a self-proving affidavit (you’ll read about those in the book—it means my witnesses won’t have to appear in probate court because their signatures are already proven.)  I feel so much better now that it’s done.  Now I can concentrate on all my other projects!

Donuts or Doughnuts?

Our young Sherriff and his trusty dog…um…deputy are on an important mission.  They must carry a box of twelve delicious donuts home.  Whoops!  One looks squished.  Should Sherriff deliver a sub-standard donut?  What should he do?

To find out the answers and see why the Sherriff has powdered sugar on his face, read The Case of the Missing Donut by Alison McGhee.  This new book is visually funny with bright, humorous illustrations that your child will enjoy.

How does a scrumptious doughnut not get eaten by hungry Mr. Bing?  By convincing him to adopt him as a doughnut dog, of course!

In Laurie Keller’s new chapter book series The Adventures of Arnie the Doughnut, we learn from Arnie how his life was transformed once he became a pet and companion to Mr. Bing.  In the premier of Arnie the Doughnut, Bowling Alley Bandit.  Mr. Bing and Arnie go bowling with the Bingbats.  As you might imagine, bowling balls and doughnuts make a dangerously silly combination.

Worlds collide in a story of mismatched lovers and west coast excess.  The highlight of Maria Semple’s This One Is Mine is its unforgettable characters.

Starving artist Teddy Reyes is a musically-gifted, poetry-spouting, golf hustler with health problems, financial problems, car problems, and women problems.

Violet Parry has issues too --a dysfunctional marriage, post-partum depression, and weight issues.  But she does have money.  Plenty of it.  It’s the biggest factor drawing these two unlikely lovers together.  (Unless it’s something else, you can decide.)

Violet’s billionaire record executive husband and his self-absorbed gold digging sister, the sister’s ex and her next –a sports writer savant that Bridezilla sets her sights on—fill the story with enough drama for a Showtime version of Desperate Housewives.

You may not exactly be rooting for these characters, but if you’re like me you won’t be able to stop wondering what they’ll get themselves into next.
