It's almost St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated each year on March 17th.
The holiday is also widely celebrated as a secular celebration of Irish culture. Cities around the world hold parades and festivals to mark the occasion, with many people participating in the "wearing of the green." Popularized by Irish immigrant communities, festivities usually include traditional Irish food and drink such as corned beef and Guinness beer.
The shamrock’s association with St. Patrick's Day comes from the popular myth that says St. Patrick used the three leaves of the plant to explain Catholicism's holy trinity to the Irish.
St. Patrick is the figure most prominently associated with bringing Christianity to Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church of Ireland as a solemnity and holy day of obligation.

A few items from our collection:

St. Patrick of Ireland by Philip Freeman is a good place to start if you are interested in learning about his life.

Favorite Food at Home: delicious comfort food from Ireland’s most famous chef by Rachel Allen.  Create your own traditional Irish meal (corn beef and cabbage, Irish stew and Irish soda bread).

The Irish Tenors  has a good version of “Danny Boy” if you want to bring a tear to your eyes.
Have a fun and safe St. Patrick’s Day; watch out for the leprechauns!

National Nutrition Month at FCPL

Well it’s March and if you’re like most people, the New Year’s resolutions are starting to look a little neglected.  The temptation to hit the snooze button instead of getting up for that morning workout is winning more often than not.  Crazy family schedules mean you’re hitting the fast food drive-thru instead of cooking at home.  And to heap on a little more guilt, March is National Nutrition Month®!
If your conscience is knocking, we can help! The library has lots of great titles to get your healthy living efforts back on track.
David Zinczenko’s series of books, “Eat This, Not That” has been expanded to include both restaurant and supermarket survival guides, and the newest,  The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution.

Trying to go vegan? Check out Isa Moskowitz’s  Appetite for reduction : 125 fast & filling low-fat vegan recipes.

If it’s exercise inspiration you need, we have a
large selection of fitness DVDs, including tae-bo!

Our streaming video collection offers informative documentaries on health and wellness, including MyPlate: Understanding the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Of course we’re trying to get healthy right along with you, but we’ve been enjoying The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Timeline of Food Fads that showcases diet crazes through the years.  Did you know that in 1928, the “Inuit Meat-and-Fat Diet” was all the rage? It recommended eating caribou, raw fish and whale blubber.  Yes, we think we’ll stick to carrot sticks too!
