Staff Picks

Everyone in Owl, South Dakota knows that the football coach keeps getting high school girls pregnant; it's the better-kept secrets that are more intriguing.

The action in Downtown Owl (Population 900) revolves around high school students, faculty and farmers whose activities include: cruising the streets arguing about music and complaining about teachers, getting drunk at each of the three bars in town, or chugging coffee and remembering better times.

The intriguing parts of this novel are the things the folks in Owl would never reveal.  My favorite chapter is a what-he-said-versus-what-he-meant and what-she-said-versus-what-she-meant conversation where much is left unsaid and even more is misinterpreted.

If you grew up in a small town or sometimes wish that you had, you’ll love Chuck Klosterman’s hillarious (and sometimes heartbreaking) slice of life story and insightful descriptions in Downtown Owl.
