Staff Picks

Worlds collide in a story of mismatched lovers and west coast excess.  The highlight of Maria Semple’s This One Is Mine is its unforgettable characters.

Starving artist Teddy Reyes is a musically-gifted, poetry-spouting, golf hustler with health problems, financial problems, car problems, and women problems.

Violet Parry has issues too --a dysfunctional marriage, post-partum depression, and weight issues.  But she does have money.  Plenty of it.  It’s the biggest factor drawing these two unlikely lovers together.  (Unless it’s something else, you can decide.)

Violet’s billionaire record executive husband and his self-absorbed gold digging sister, the sister’s ex and her next –a sports writer savant that Bridezilla sets her sights on—fill the story with enough drama for a Showtime version of Desperate Housewives.

You may not exactly be rooting for these characters, but if you’re like me you won’t be able to stop wondering what they’ll get themselves into next.
