Staff Pick - Teen

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

When I first picked up this book and saw that it was written in free verse, I didn’t think I could handle an entire story told in poems.  But, I started reading, and before I knew it, I had read one third of it, and I was hooked!  Definitely worthy of the Newbery Award, the story flows smoothly and quickly using poetic style to enhance the plot.  Despite the brevity of words, I still felt there was adequate character development in this very moving story.  I loved Josh, JB, Miss Sweet Tea, and Da Man!  Be sure to have tissues nearby when you get to the end!
