Library Limelight: Molly Moore, Collection Development Librarian

Library Limelight is intended to be a quick read to help FCPL patrons get to know our librarians, staff, and volunteers. We hope you enjoy learning about the people who make our libraries great!

Name: Molly Moore
Position: Collection Development Librarian
Location: Headquarters - Materials Department

Where is your hometown?

Watkinsville, GA

How long have you been at FCPL?

Just over one year. It’s flown by!

What other jobs have you had?

Previously, I was an assistant branch manager for the Bogart Library in Bogart, GA where I did everything from tween, teen, and adult programming to outreach and publicity. (Fun fact: Cumming Library Information Specialist Melissa Gunter used to work there with me!)  Before the Bogart Library, I worked as the young adult coordinator at the Oconee County Library in Watkinsville, GA where I planned teen programs and began my love for collection development. I have been so blessed by libraries!

Why did you choose to work in a library?

In college I wanted to be an event planner, and during my senior year I discovered a passion for non-profits. Working in my first library job was the perfect combination of both and I fell in love with library land. Grad school solidified my love of collection development, and here I am! Giving back to the community is the most important part of library work.

Describe your job in five words or fewer:

Carefully selecting new books daily.

What is unique about your job?

There are always a million (fun!) things to do. Between ordering new materials, replacing worn materials, handling patron requests, reading professional book reviews, ordering additional copies to fulfill holds, creating a collection for the new Denmark Library, and keeping track of budgets/statistics/trends, I have plenty to do every day. Each day is an adventure at the library, especially behind the scenes.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Watching people get excited about upcoming books. I usually learn about a book’s release months before the public (sometimes years!) and I love to see the buzz build. Seeing the hold lists get longer means people are eagerly anticipating a book’s release, telling their friends, and sharing the love of reading. What’s better than that?

What’s the most interesting place you’ve lived or traveled?

I lived in Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, and New Hampshire all before the 4th grade. I’ve been in Georgia ever since! The most interesting place I’ve traveled to has been Nicaragua, though I also loved seeing all the New England states!

What are your hobbies?

Playing with my three nieces, swimming (pools, oceans, lakes—I love it all!), trying new recipes, playing board and card games, shopping, traveling, and of course, reading!

What are you reading right now?

I am reading Your Life Has Been Delayed by Michelle Mason. This teen book is set in 1995 and when 17-year-old Jenny disembarks her flight, she learns her plane supposedly disappeared 25 years ago and the world has continued on without her. It is a fun, light read and really opens your eyes to how much life has changed in 25 years!

I am also listening to the e-audiobook Find Your People by Jennie Allen. It is a religious self-help book about creating authentic relationships and how maintaining friendship and community are at the core of humanity.

Paper books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

Paper books for fiction, and audiobooks for non-fiction.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I am constantly amazed by this library and all the talented, educated, and dedicated staff! When I took this job last year, it was my absolute dream job, and then when I arrived, I was blown away by how warm and welcoming every single one of my coworkers turned out to be! I am so grateful to work in a community that supports its library so well!
