Library Limelight: Karina Segura, Outreach Specialist

Library Limelight is intended to be a quick read to help FCPL patrons get to know our librarians, staff, and volunteers. We hope you enjoy learning about the people who make our libraries great!

Name: Karina Segura
Position: Outreach Specialist
Location: Administrative Offices

Where is your hometown?

Alpharetta, GA

How long have you been at FCPL?

Since February of 2020, so just about 2 ½ years. (Oh my how time flies!)

What other jobs have you had at FCPL?

When I first got hired at FCPL, I started as a part-time Youth Specialist at the Post Road branch. I was there for about a month before the BIG shutdown - I didn’t even get to do my first in-person storytime that I had planned. Later that summer, I moved over to the Cumming branch as a full-time Youth Specialist. (I was extremely grateful for that opportunity!) After a little more than a year of being in that role, I finally worked up my courage to apply for Outreach and I’ve been here ever since.

Why did you choose to work in a library?

For many reasons! Honestly, being surrounded by books is one of the best feelings in the world. Just knowing that out there is a really good book that you haven’t stumbled upon yet - pure magic! Also, ever since I was little, going to the library was one of my favorite things to do. I just knew I had to try being a librarian one day.

Describe your job in five words or fewer.

Every day is an adventure!

What is unique about your job?

The fact that sometimes I forget that I work at the library is pretty unique (and funny). There are days when we basically “live” out of the Bookmobile all day, and there are days when we’re heading over to a senior facility to do a program and we feel like we’re just going to visit our sweet friends. Outreach is overall very unique!

What is your favorite part of your job?

In a nutshell, it’s the relationships we build with the people in our community.

What’s the most interesting place you’ve lived or traveled?

I think it would have to be where my parents are from: Guanajuato, Mexico. I feel very lucky to have been able to visit often with my family as I was growing up. It’s like a whole different world with amazing food, lovely people, and beautiful places. If you ever have the chance to go, you definitely should!

What are your hobbies?

Recently, I have been teaching myself how to create digital works on an iPad. I love watching tutorials online and following along, and then I’ll sort of “test” myself and try to recreate the work all over again without referring to the video. It’s a fun challenge!

What are you reading right now?

I am currently reading two books: The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory and Miss Quinces by Kat Fajardo. I tend to read lighter/fun/romantic in the summertime for some reason and psychological/suspense/thrillers the rest of the year.

Paper books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

A mix of paper books & audiobooks.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Thank you all (staff and patrons) for making FCPL such a wonderful place to work, and thank you for taking the time to read a little about me!
