On June 19, 1865 soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas announcing the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery in the United States. Every year the United States commemorates this historic event on June 19. In Juneteenth for Mazie, a young girl learns about her own family history from the first Juneteenth through events of the Civil Rights era as she prepares for the annual Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth for Mazie uses thoughtful text and colorful illustrations to help young children learn about this important national holiday.
Juneteenth from the Racial Justice in America: Histories series in FCPL's juvenile nonfiction collection offers a useful timeline of important milestones in American history relating to Juneteenth including the Emancipation Proclamation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, and the origins of the national holiday.
The book includes photographs from an Emancipation Day celebration in Richmond, Virginia in 1905, historical photographs of a few of the 180,000 Blacks who served in the Civil War, and contemporary Juneteenth celebrations. Juneteenth can help young people gain a valuable perspective on the significance of this American holiday.
Forsyth County Public Library wishes everyone a happy Juneteenth!
