Persuasion was Jane Austen’s last completed novel, published six months after her death in 1817. The story follows docile Anne Elliot who, eight years ago, allowed friends and family to persuade her to break off her engagement to a young man who was seen as too common and poor to marry the daughter of a baronet. When Frederick Wentworth comes back into Anne’s life as a wealthy, eligible naval captain, she must contend with her re-emerging feelings for him and his bitterness over her past rejection.
As with her other novels, Austen wittily portrays an amusing and complex cast of characters in this story of a second chance at love. Anne Elliot, more mature and quietly observant than other Austen heroines, leads by example as she navigates snobbish family, well-meaning but misguided friends, and unwanted suitors.
