Library Limelight: Jen Bell, Information Specialist, Cumming Library

Library Limelight is intended to be a quick read to help FCPL patrons get to know our librarians, staff, and volunteers. We hope you enjoy learning about the people who make our libraries great!

Where is your hometown?

I was born in California, but raised in New Jersey then moved to Anderson, South Carolina during high school. However, I consider Charleston, SC to be my hometown, since it’s where I spent most of my life through college before moving to Georgia three years ago.

How long have you been at FCPL?

I've been at FCPL about two and a half years.

What other jobs have you had at FCPL?

This is the only one.

Why did you choose to work in a library?

I come from a family of readers, including a librarian grandmother, and I’ve been a library user from before I can even remember. When the last recession hit and the company where I had been for many years closed, I decided to go back to school and become a librarian.

Describe your job in five words or less.

Helping, teaching, learning, challenging, rewarding

What is unique about your job?

It’s a great feeling knowing that a lot of what we do here does make a difference in people’s lives. There are not a lot of jobs give you that satisfaction.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I enjoy problem-solving. I have fun playing detective to figure out the answers to some of the questions we receive.

What’s the most interesting place you’ve lived or traveled?

I spent a couple of weeks in Switzerland while in college. I stayed a few days in St. Moritz and the amount of stars in the sky at night was incredible! Last fall, my husband and I visited family in the Bay Area and we also made it out to Yosemite, which was amazing.

What are your hobbies?

Reading, of course! Before the pandemic, trivia nights were a regular event. And I’d have to say home improvement, too, since it seems my husband and I always have some sort of project going at our house (currently a new catio), but we always have fun doing them.

What are you reading right now?

Right now I’m reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and next up is Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler.

Paper books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

eBooks always!

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

My sister owns a Grade A goat dairy in South Carolina, which means I get to play with the goats and the rest of the menagerie whenever I visit!
