Needless to say, recent years have brought on plenty of anxiety.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 7% of children between ages 3 and 11 are impacted by anxiety. Symptoms of anxiety often begin to manifest around age six. Anxiety sufferers experience worry, anxiety, or distress out of proportion with a given situation. Sometimes the feeling is near-constant.
FCPL’s Anxiety Helping Kit contains five picture books that feature characters dealing with various types of anxiety. The kits also include an anxiety activity guide and a list of online resources for parents and caregivers. I was really impressed with the thoughtful picture books in FCPL’s Anxiety Helping Kit.
In What If, Pig? by Linzie Hunter, Pig anticipates everything that can go wrong before his upcoming party. The book is filled with cute, hand-drawn illustrations of Pig and his friends.
Puppy in my Head by Elise Gravel describes what it’s like to live with feelings that are difficult to control and offers some breathing techniques for managing them.
In My Monster and Me, Nadiya Hussain writes about a child living with a panic disorder who learns to tame the monster in his head.
Mindi and the Goose No One Else Could See by Sam McBratney features a young girl who learns some simple tricks to tame her unwanted thoughts.
Mila Misses Mommy by Judith Koppens is about a girl who learns to cope with separation anxiety and is intended for children as young at 30 months.
Helping Kits are a great tool for young people and caregivers who may be managing difficult situations. In addition to our Anxiety Helping Kit, we also have kits available to help children cope with Bullying, Death of a Loved One, Death of a Pet, Divorce, Military Families, and Moving. Each Helping Kit includes picture books and a list of online resources and activities related to the subject.
