FCPL Reads 2022 - Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Staff Picks

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, here are some recent favorites by Asian and Asian American authors.

The Woman in the Purple Skirt by Natsuko Imamura

Literary fiction fans will enjoy this slim, psychological story set in modern Japan. The Woman in the Purple Skirt revolves around a woman's growing obsession with a stranger in her neighborhood. Chance encounters and subtle manipulations lead to strange twists in this award-winning Japanese translation.

Braised Pork by An Yu

In Braised Pork by An Yu, a widow in Bejing searches for meaning following her husband’s unusual death. I enjoyed learning about modern Chinese customs and following along as Jia Jia travels to a village in rural Tibet on her quest for answers.
Disappear Doppelgänger Disappear by Matthew Salesses

In Matthew Salesses’s Disappear Doppelgänger Disappear, a divorced Korean American father becomes convinced he’s disappearing, although between drinking, passing out, dwelling in the past, and trying to write, it’s hard to tell whether Matt Kim has a firm grasp on reality. Even Matt’s girlfriend isn’t sure what to think until her doppelgänger shows up with startling revelations about Matt’s counterpart. Disappear Doppelgänger Disappear puts a fascinating twist on timely issues of racial identity.
