MakerDay at the Post Road Library: Galaxy Mirrors
Did you miss last month’s MakerDay at Post Road? If so, you missed out on a unique craft and a lot of fun. Using alcohol inks, we made galaxy mirrors!
None of the patrons had used alcohol ink before, so they were excited and a bit nervous. Every patron received a mirror, two small canvases, a small dropper with rubbing alcohol, and the alcohol inks.
I began by explaining the supplies and showing them a sample mirror I had made. I taught patrons a few techniques and did a small demonstration at each table. We discussed not aiming for perfection and instead enjoying the creative process.
To use alcohol inks, we put a drop of rubbing alcohol down and then a drop of the ink inside of the rubbing alcohol. The inks then blend together to make beautiful designs. I had the patrons practice on their small canvases so they could get a feel for it, and then they began their mirrors. It was fun to see them use color combinations I hadn't considered, and several commented that, while they didn't know what they were doing, they were having fun playing! After the mirrors dried, patrons each received a bit of gold paint and used dotting tools to make stars on top of their galaxy design.
While they were working, several patrons got up and walked around the room to draw inspiration from each other. It was great to hear their encouragement for each other and see people get to know one another.
When they finished, everyone was excited to bring home a mirror and both of their canvases. One patron said she planned to put magnets on her tiny canvases and display them on her fridge. A few patrons asked where to get alcohol ink and said they were planning to buy some. Overall, it was a great MakerDay!
Our next MakerDay is September 18, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Post Road Library. We will be learning about block printing and making stamps! This is an adult only event. No registration is required. Supplies are limited, so please arrive early to secure your spot.
