November is National Novel Writing Month

Each November, aspiring novelists from around the globe challenge themselves to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days. In 2022, over 400,000 writers took part in National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo.

The rules are simple.

The writing project must be new.
The project must be written by a single person.
It has to be finished by midnight on November 30th.

Are you ready for the challenge?

NaNoWriMo’s website offers writing prompts and resources that can help writers track their progress.

Forsyth County Public Library patrons can also take advantage of library books and online resources on writing. Sign up for free courses in Universal Class on topics like Creative Writing for Beginners, Novel Writing 101, Romance Writing, or one of the dozens of other self-paced writing courses offered.
Or join one of our writers groups. FCPL’s writing groups for adult and teen writers offer local writers an opportunity to share their work and get supportive feedback. Check out our event calendar to find a writers' group at your branch.

The writers in FCPL's Sharon Forks Writers' Group have recommendations for anyone interested in writing.

Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.

Since 1994, generations of writers have been inspired by Anne Lamott's witty insights about writing. Bird by Bird's advice on avoiding perfectionism to complete a first draft seems even more relevant during National Novel Writing Month.

Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody

Wondering how to plot a novel? Novelist Jessica Brody presents a comprehensive story-structure guide for novelists that applies the famed Save the Cat! screenwriting methodology to the world of novel writing.

If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all: read a lot and write a lot.

Master storyteller Stephen King shares his insights on writing in a book Time Magazine lists as one of the Top 100 Nonfiction Books of All Time.

Good luck to everyone participating in National Novel Writing Month!
