Halloween Books for Kids

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday, and I love to share the experience with my son. We spend more time outside playing in the fallen leaves and eating pumpkin spice rolls (his new favorite treat). He helps me decorate the house with bats, ghosts and skeletons, and he loves roaming the Halloween sections with me at the stores. One of my favorite things to do is bring home Halloween books from the library for us to read together. The following are the ones he requests the most.

Cookie Boo by Ruth Paul

This rhythmic read aloud narrates the adventures of seven cookies who climb out of the cookie tin and go walking the neighborhood on Halloween. Their paths cross a monster with a sweet tooth. Can they return to the safety of their tin?

Frankenslime by Joy Keller

“It’s ALIVE!!!” Victoria and her assistant, her dog Igor, love making slime and taking notes on their experiments. She is always on the hunt for better, more creative slime. One thunderous rainy night, she is struck by an amazing idea. But the experiment does not go as planned. Should they run for their lives or...could it turn out to be a good creation? You can’t go wrong with a book about slime and dogs, two things my son loves.

Witch and Wombat by Ashley Belote

Every young witch is excited when they finally get their very first cat. Wilma has been looking forward to this day, but instead of a cat, she gets…a WOMBAT! What a CAT-astrophe! Wilma tries to get her wombat to act like a cat, but then she thinks maybe having a wombat is not bad at all. The book is peppered with wombat facts. My son loves the colorful and adorable illustrations and the mention of wombat’s unique cube shaped poop always guarantees a giggle.

The Boo Crew Needs You by Vicky Fang

It’s Halloween and the Boo Crew—a ghost, a skeleton, and a vampire—see so many problems on the way to the Halloween Party. This interactive story lets the reader help them fix these issues, whether it's to push a button to call the boo crew, blow out a candle to calm a terrified Frankenstein monster, or even help the Haunted House that has tipped over. My son loves any book that he gets to interact with, and it is definitely a great book for the little ones who find it difficult to sit still during story time.

Christopher Pumpkin by Sue Hendra

“I’m Christopher Pumpkin. I like all things fun!” is the tagline of our title character. A witch brings pumpkins to life to help her decorate for her upcoming Halloween party, and Christopher P. has his own unique ways of doing things. Can this sparkling, bubbly pumpkin create something frightening enough to keep him from being turned into soup? I have used the word “quirky” to describe my son, and he definitely lives in his own little world, which is probably why this one is a favorite of ours.
