Adventure Begins at Your Library: Explore Green Reads

As part of Forsyth County Public Library's summer reading theme, Adventure Beings at Your Library, visitors to the Sharon Forks Library can explore new genres and find reading suggestions in themed picnic baskets throughout the branch.

Summer picnic basket themes highlight books for foodies, short stories, classics, and green reads. Green reads titles include fiction and nonfiction books that have an environmental angle. Fictional books that focus on the environment are also called ecofiction.

Our Green Reads picnic basket includes the following titles:

The Last Beekeeper by Julie Carrick Dalton

The Last Beekeeper is a post-apocalyptic thriller that imagines a world where bees and other pollinating insects are disappearing. A bee researcher may be society’s last hope to reverse the Great Collapse, though he’d rather go to prison then reveal what he’s learned.

Frequent hurricanes and rising sea levels radically alter the lives of Floridians and lead to the federal government shutting down the entire state! The Light Pirate centers around the ordeals of one Florida family in the face of ecological disaster.

Trashlands by Alison Stine

Alison Stine’s dystopian novel Trashlands envisions a world where environmental catastrophes have radically altered the American landscape and human civilization. The story takes place in Appalachia, renamed Scrappalachia, where families shelter in abandoned vehicles and venture into contaminated rivers in search of nonbiodegradable plastic they can trade for food.
