Unreadable: Podcast Transcript - September 2024

Smokey Bear turns 80 this year, and to celebrate you can participate in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge. What's that? In this episode of Unreadable, Ross speaks with Sarah Brubaker, Programming Manager at FCPL, about the challenge, including how to sign up and how to earn prizes.

This episode also includes listener submitted reviews!

Introduction
Ross Gericke: Hello and welcome to Unreadable, the official Forsyth County Public Library podcast for news, upcoming programs, and recommendations. I’m your host Ross Gericke, the branch manager at Hampton Park. In this episode, I talk with Sarah Brubaker, Programming Manager at FCPL, about the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge, taking place at the time of this recording and continuing until November 28.

And for the first time on this podcast, we’ve got a couple of book reviews from listeners like you.

Now on with the show.

Interview
Ross: Sarah, welcome to the podcast.

Sarah Brubaker: Hello, I’m Sarah Brubaker, and I’m the Programming Manager here with Forsyth County Public Library, and I’m here to talk about the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge.

Ross: Right, just because Summer is over doesn’t mean reading opportunities are over, right?

Sarah: Exactly. So, we want to make sure that everyone has opportunities to get excited about reading and even earn some prizes. The Smokey Bear Reading Challenge runs from August 15 until November 28, and the challenge is to read three books on wildfire prevention or the environment and to earn four activity badges through Beanstack

So, to participate in the program, you will register on Beanstack, just like you would for our Summer Reading or Winter Reading challenges, and you will be able to see all of the activities that you could participate in. Some of the ways that you could earn activity badges might be planting flowers or going on a hike. So, make sure that you are looking at all of the options before you and seeing how you can connect with nature in order to win the prizes for the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge.

Ross: Tell us about the exciting prizes you can win for this reading challenge.

Sarah: Readers who complete the challenge of reading three books and completing four activity badges will receive a button that they will get in the branch as well as a completion certificate.

Ross: Those are some exciting and relatively easy to get prizes as well, but we do have a program going on, celebrating Smokey the Bear as well, right?

Sarah: That’s correct. On Saturday, October 26, at 11:00 AM, there will be a Smokey Bear Celebration that is a family Storytime and craft at our Cumming Library.

Ross: Sounds like a great thing to attend. Sarah, thank you for coming on the podcast.

Sarah: You’re welcome.

Book Reviews
Ross: I’m excited to see that we couldn’t have had a larger spread in tone or topic between our first two listener book reviews. First, we’ve got Carolynn, who will be reviewing Tom Wolfe’s modern classic A Man in Full. Then, we’ve got Andrea with My Little Pony: Trixie and the Razzle Dazzle Ruse by G. N. Berrow.

And hey, if you’ve got a book review you’d like to read or have me read, or maybe even a library-related question, send it to the podcast via our email at  unreadable@forsythpl.org. Now onto our reviews.

Carolynn: Hi, my name is Carolynn. I just recently finished reading A Man in Full by Tom Wolfe. I was eager to read it because a friend of mine had seen the series on tv and she said it was excellent. I have read other books by Tom Wolfe but not this one, and it was a little daunting because it is over 700 and some pages long. However, it is a very complicated and intense story that weaves together so many different threads about each character that he introduces. Tom Wolfe has a unique gift of being able to phonetically capture the way an individual speaks, and he included individuals such as prison inmates and members of a gang and a very proper black lawyer and a southern real estate developer who lived in Buckhead and also had been developing a property in Cherokee County. I don’t want to give away the story, but I would encourage anyone who likes Tom Wolfe and really would enjoy settling in for a good read this summer – I hope you get a chance to read it. Enjoy!

Andrea: Hi I’m Andrea, and I’m here to review My Little Pony: Trixie and the Razzle Dazzle Ruse by G. N. Berrow. So, in this story, Trixie wants Rarity to make her a beautiful cloak for her biggest magic show yet. Trixie is really hoping to impress the Star Mane Society of Magicians. She wants to impress them in hopes of them inviting her into their society. But when Trixie goes to Rarity’s boutique to ask her about a cloak, Rarity accidentally zaps Trixie’s hoof with magic. Rarity's accident enables Trixie to turn things into gems just by touching them. Trixie’s new ability makes her very popular, but it begins to be much more trouble than she thought.

So, I really enjoyed this story. Trixie’s character is hilarious, and she makes the story very entertaining. I recommend this book if you like magical mishaps and lots of humor. Make sure to check out the other books from G. N. Berrow because I really enjoyed lots of those. Thanks for listening to my review of My Little Pony: Trixie and the Razzle Dazzle Ruse.
