Cumming Library Partners with Otwell Middle School’s Special Education Classes for Reading Program

Shelly Walker teaches reading to four special education classes at Otwell Middle School. Many of her students speak English as a second language and they’ve had only minimal exposure to public libraries.

Wanting to foster an excitement about reading in her students, as well as expanding their reading capabilities, Walker received a grant to start a new program with the Cumming Library and Cumming Elementary School in which her students will select books and practice reading aloud to elementary students.

Each of Walker’s classes visited the Cumming Library at the beginning of the school year. Youth Services Supervisor Julie Boyd led the students on a tour of the library, explained how libraries work, and how to check out books and materials.

“We focused on where to find materials in the library and students checked out books using their new library cards. It was a great first visit and I look forward to getting to know all of the students this year,” says Boyd.

Next, Walker will guide her students in selecting books from the library and helping them practice reading. Then, the students will visit Cumming Elementary to read a book to their reading buddies.

“Ms. Walker plans to bring her students to the library regularly. During each visit, a library staff member will meet with the class. Some sessions may be more involved with instruction about resources, while other sessions will simply be a time for the students to browse, check out, and enjoy library materials,” explains Boyd.

Forsyth County Public Library is pleased to support local students in developing language and literacy skills and we wish our friends at Otwell Middle a wonderful school year.
