Staff Picks Devolution (Adult Fiction) by Max Brooks

Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Ranier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks

Devolution combines scientific research, reports, and evidence collected after the fictional Rainer Sasquatch Massacre, with journal entries kept by a resident of a tiny eco-community in Washington State.

Kate Holland's journal describes how she and her husband arrive in tiny Greenloop, Washington shortly before Mount Rainier erupts and sends the Pacific Northwest into chaos. While populated areas like Seattle face food shortages and rioting, the isolated community of Greenloop — with only ten adults and one child — is entirely cut off from the outside world.

Without Siri to answer all their questions and no weekly drone deliveries, the residents start preparing for a long, cold winter. Personality conflicts arise as soon as talks of food rationing begin but food isn’t the only necessity Greenloop lacks. The high-tech community has no tools or weapons, an oversight that leaves them vulnerable to unexpected predators from the woods who are experts at camouflage.

Devolution is a great escapist thriller that will have you believing in Bigfoot!
