Staff Picks The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré

From the first page, The Girl With the Louding Voice broke my heart. I had put off reading it for this very reason–I thought this book would leave me feeling emotionally spent. The incredible thing about this book, however, was that the author's exquisite prose and powerful characters took me through that heartbreak and left me feeling like the world can, at the same time, be a beautiful and hopeful place.

Set in Nigeria, this book immerses the reader in the life of Adunni, the 14-year-old protagonist, as she fights to obtain an education and live her life autonomously despite staggering obstacles. The dialect may be difficult for readers to understand at first, but the author employs it so masterfully that it quickly becomes familiar and, rather than acting as a barrier between readers and Adunni, draws them into her world.

The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Daré was the January book for Novel Diversions, a book club for adults at the Post Road Library. Novel Diversions meets the second Wednesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. The next meeting will take place on March 8, 2023 to discuss Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, the 2017 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
