Staff Picks: The Last by Hanna Jameson

The Last by Hanna Jameson

A mixed group of international tourists, academic conference attendees, and staff members at a remote Swiss resort debate whether to remain at the lodge or face the unknown when a nuclear weapon detonates over Washington D.C., cutting off their communication with the outside world.

Hanna Jameson’s The Last is a suspense story set in unprecedented times. American history professor Jon Keller realizes his marriage issues aren't as important as he previously thought when he finds himself among strangers during a global crisis.

While dark skies, hunger, dead batteries, depression, health issues, and isolation wear on the survivors, Keller declares himself the last living historian and begins to chronicle civilization's final days by interviewing the hotel guests and staff on the premises. In the process, he learns some unusual details about the resort, makes an alarming discovery while inspecting the water supply, and takes on the role of amateur sleuth.

Fans of thoughtful high-stakes survival stories like Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker1222 by Anne Holt, One by One by Ruth Ware, and An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena will enjoy this genre-bending mystery and survival tale.
