Library Offers On-Demand, Online Tutoring for Start of New School Year
Just in time for the start of a new academic year, Forsyth County Public Library launches a free, web-based, on-demand tutoring service for students of all ages with Tutor.com.
Beginning August 1, anyone with a library card can access this free service inside the library or from home using any computer or mobile device connected to the Internet. The service will be available daily from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Using Tutor.com services is completely free for students and adults, and provides access to live, one-to-one tutoring, a real-time writing center, test preparation, practice quizzes, and 24/7 access to worksheets, videos, and tutorials in over 40 subjects.
“Tutor.com is offered at more than 2,000 public libraries across the country and we’re proud to offer the service free of charge to students and adult learners in our community,” says Anna Lyle, Library Director.
Academic Tutoring
Students in kindergarten through second-year college students, as well as adult learners, can get one-on-one help with homework, test preparation, and skills and concepts they are learning in class for math, science, writing, English, Spanish, and social studies.
Tutor.com also provides assistance for using Microsoft® Office and preparing for college entrance exams, Advanced Placement® exams, ACT®/SAT®, and GED®/HiSET®.
Writing Reviews
Students or adults working on essays, book reports, short stories, and college or scholarship application essays have two ways of getting work reviewed by Tutor.com’s WriteTutor experts: live, on-demand tutoring in an interactive, online classroom or through Tutor.com’s 24/7 Drop-Off Review service.
Practice Quizzes & Study Resources
Students preparing for an end-of-chapter test, a final exam, or standardized test can use Tutor.com’s Practice Quizzes to assess their knowledge on over 100 areas in math, science and social studies.
The Tutor.com SkillsCenter Resource Library provides 24/7 access to thousands of educationally sound resources. Students can watch instructional videos, download practice worksheets, customize their own flashcards for studying, and get test taking tips.
Help for Job Seekers
Job seekers at all levels can use Tutor.com to work with professional job search coaches in a supportive and encouraging environment for help with job searching, online applications, resume writing, and interview preparation. Job seekers also have access to resume templates, cover letter samples, online job search tools, and career advice in the Tutor.com Career Center.
“Beyond offering daily homework help and test preparation for students, our patrons will find value in the additional services Tutor.com can provide for job seekers and for students who want to improve their ACT®/SAT® test scores without paying fees for private classes or tutors,” adds Lyle.

Friends Bookstore Closing at Sharon Forks Library
$5 Fill-A-Bag Sale
To reduce the volume of inventory in the Friends Bookstore, the FCPL Friends & Advocates (FCPLFA) will host a special $5 Fill-A-Bag Sale during the back-to-school season.
FCPL Friends & Advocates members are invited to shop the $5 Fill-A-Bag Sale at special Members-Only days on Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25. If you are not yet an FCPLFA member, applications for membership will be available at the Sale.
The $5 Fill-A-Bag Sale will be open to the public Wednesday, July 26 through Sunday, July 30 during the Sharon Forks Library's regular operating hours.
Bags will be provided by the Friends Bookstores and you may fill a bag with books for just $5.
If you have questions about the $5 Fill-A-Bag Sale, please ask an FCPLFA volunteer in the Friends Bookstore at the Sharon Forks Library.

Following the closure of the Friends Bookstore at the Sharon Forks Library on July 30, patrons may shop for gently used books in the Friends Bookstores at the Cumming and Post Road Libraries.

Historical fiction was trending this week as book blogger Nora St. Laurent recommended Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green and we posted a shelfie of the book in our Large Type collection.

Lit Chicks Book Club Loved The Little Paris Bookshop
Five first-timers came to Lit Chicks Book Blub today and helped make the discussion of The Little Paris Bookshop a lively one.
Every single person liked this Nina George novel and said they would recommend it to others and described it as a fun, easy read. One woman said she cried several times while nearing the end of the book, which is understandable since there are many touching moments dealing with relationships and their resolutions.
One of the main themes in this book is that reading can be therapeutic. The main character owns a floating bookstore called the Literary Apothecary and he is talented at prescribing just the right books for people. Our group talked about reading books that were helpful to us when we needed them.
Conversely, one woman shared that a book that had been recommended to her by a friend turned out to be a poor choice for her to read at that particular time in her life.
All the author and book references sprinkled throughout the novel only added to glee of this group of bibliophiles. If you are a Francophile or enjoy reading books set in France, this book will not disappoint you. Our book club all wanted to fly to France and travel the canals and rivers like the characters in the book. The descriptions of Paris, the rivers, and all the little towns were vivid and caused many of us to believe that this would make a beautiful movie. A romantic comedy set on the rivers of France seems like a winning idea.
Three patrons in the group listened to the audiobook, but only one finished it all the way through in that format. The audiobook was described as “sleep inducing” due to the beautifully calm tone and French accent of the narrator, so if you are a commuter audiobook listener, this selection might not work for you.

Staff Picks Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green (Adult Fiction)
Wedded to War swept me away into a powerful, deep and heartfelt drama. My heart ached for the cast of conflicted characters. This story is brilliantly woven from the fabric of history with characters that pulled at my heart as they endured unimaginable aspects of war. It moved me and marked my heart. This story is meant to be experienced and shared with others. With so much to discuss from cover to cover, it’s a top choice for book clubs!

Staff Picks- Food Swings by Jessica Seinfeld
Food Swings: 125+ Recipes to Enjoy Your Life of Virtue & Vice by Jessica Seinfeld with Sara Quessenberry
The cover first caught my eye with the doughnut and broccoli, then I noticed the title and just HAD to look inside! Captivated by the mouthwatering extraordinary photographs of almost every yummy dish, I wanted to make everything I saw. I also loved the fact that the recipes had easy to find ingredients with simple instructions.
When I delved into the solid blue pages, the author gave a peek at her personal life. I liked that she has a passion for creating good, simple food for busy people. She isn’t a chef and doesn’t play one on T.V. She does happen to be married to the famous comedian Jerry Seinfeld. With her past cookbooks, she tried to help motivate people to cook. I liked having "healthy" and "vice" recipes in the same book. As she puts it, “Sometimes you need to feel the wind in your hair.” She talks about eating wholesome foods, eating what your body craves, and occasionally eating treats. This way you can enjoy life and feel satisfied.
I like her philosophy about cooking. She says, “We use a few select ingredients to achieve maximum flavor at minimum cost…I don’t pretend to have all the answers on how to eat or live. Like most people. I am just trying to figure out what works for me. My goal is simply to be helpful to those who share a low-key, high-quality approach.”
Here are some recipes my family loved: eggplant & cauliflower “meatballs”, veggie burgers with pickled cucumber and onion, brown rice bowl with black beans, avocado and sweet potato. These recipes are flavorful and my family asked for seconds. Amazing!
Recipes I want to try on the "vice" side are the cinnamon swirl coffee cake, creamy mushroom pasta, eggplant cutlets, and pepper jack and zucchini quesadillas. This book has over 125 recipes, and I look forward to trying each and every one.

Last week we asked a simple question of our patrons on Facebook: "What are you reading over the Independence Day holiday?"
We're glad to see that our patrons are reading widely from our collections of historical fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, and non-fiction.Though some of the materials suggested were in print, we were also able to showcase eBook and audiobook versions of certain titles, as well as a few in Spanish!

I was born in a tiny town called West, Texas, but lived in Australia for most of my childhood until moving back to the states and settling in Georgia.How long have you been at FCPL?

Information Specialist at the Sharon Forks branchWhy did you choose to work in a library?
I have always felt at home at the library. As a teen, it was my “happy place” and I spent my summers walking back and forth to the library lugging my giant backpack filled with books. After graduating college I found myself in jobs that did not bring me much joy, so when I saw a job posting for the library, I realized I needed to return to my “happy place.” Now, I am pursuing a Masters in Library and Information Science because I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else!Describe your job in five words or less.
Helping kids/teens love reading!What is unique about your job?
It takes a lot of creativity and a learning mentality. Creating programs gives me the chance to exercise my own creativity and learn more about various subjects, so that I can effectively share it with the kids and help guide them on their own learning experiences.What is your favorite part of your job?
Building relationships with my wonderful co-workers and all the children, teens, and adults we serve. I love it when the kids come find me to tell me about the books they are reading, or when I can provide an avenue for teens to discover new passions and find their tribe.What’s the most interesting place you’ve lived or traveled?
I spent my childhood in Australia, but have also been fortunate to be able to visit New Zealand, Peru, Nova Scotia, and states around the U.S.What are your hobbies?

Lit Chicks Book Club Gives Today Will Be Different Good Review
We had a great time chatting about one of the wackiest characters that we have read about in a while. Eleanor Flood is a mess. She wakes up one morning determined to start her day new. She wants to be a better mother, a better wife; she wants to be a better Eleanor. What follows is the fantastical disaster of her efforts that day.
One participant described the book as “kooky, funny, and a fast read.” Another agreed and said that there were many times that she laughed out loud while reading about Eleanor’s crazy adventures.
Two in our group listened to the eAudiobook and seemed to have a difficult time following the many flashbacks throughout the story. Also, this book has several graphics that do not translate well via audiobook. For this reason, our group recommends reading the print version (also available in large type) or the eBook.
