Craftsmanship Series at the Cumming Library

We live in a world where we can order things at the click of a button and have them show up at our doors the next day; where machines make most of the things we use and, if something breaks, it is relatively easy to get a replacement. We've come a long way from traveling in a wagon pulled by a horse or handmaking a leather pouch with a needle, thread, and awl. What is now mass-produced used to be homemade or crafted by artisans who specialized in their particular art. What are some of those skills and how are they performed?

Explore the arts of clay work and blacksmithing and learn about the tools and processes through the Craftsmanship series at the Cumming Library.

Crafting with Clay: A Handbuilding Demo
Saturday, September 3 from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

In this program, Alex Kraft, an artist and associate professor at the University of North Georgia, will demonstrate the tools and process of hand building a clay art piece.

The Craft of Blacksmithing
Saturday, September 10 from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Wind Chapman of the Long Mountain Living History Center will present a lecture and demonstration of the tools and processes used in blacksmithing.

No registration is required for these programs.

Book Explorers: A Book Club for Kids in Grades K-3

Book Explorers is a book club for kids in grades K-3 (older siblings are welcome to attend!).

Join us as we read aloud The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and learn about the art technique Pointillism. Our activity will give you the chance to experiment on your own and create paintings with dots!

Book Explorers will meet at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, August 23 from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

It is not necessary to read the book ahead of time. Registration is not required, but if you would like a reminder email, you may register for the event.

Set in Savannah, Georgia, the protagonist Harper McClain is a journalist for a small Savannah newspaper. The first in the series, The Echo Killing begins with a murder that bears a striking resemblance to McClain's mother's murder years earlier. Those familiar with Savannah will recognize some of the settings as well as the distinct feel of the town, and the increasing suspense will keep readers turning pages.
