Certain novels are so captivating they’re well worth reading more than once.  Such is the case with one of my favorite stories by one of my favorite authors, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Unforgettable characters and master storytelling have made Irving a literary icon and the tiny but mighty Owen Meany -- a young man with a dramatic vision of his own destiny – is certainly one of Irving's most original creations.

At the heart of Owen's coming-of-age story is an enduring friendship with narrator Johnny Wheelwright, a character based on John Irving himself. Growing up in Gravesend, New Hampshire during the transformative 1950s and 60s, the boys experience tragedies and triumphs in this humor-filled and heartbreaking story.

Enjoy the story for the first time or enjoy reading it again. It’s a book club favorite and modern classic that was loosely adapted into the 1998 film Simon Burch. Staff Picks: The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd by Josie Silver

The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd by Josie Silver

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did since it's not the type of book I typically read; however I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

In the beginning of the novel, Lydia’s fiancé, childhood sweetheart and love of her life, Freddie, is killed in a car accident on Lydia’s birthday. In her grief, Lydia’s mother procures her a bottle of a trial version of sleeping pills. Lydia soon learns that after she takes one of the sleeping pills, she is transported into a world where Freddie is still alive.

The book alternates between “awake” chapters and “asleep” chapters. The “awake”  chapters portray Lydia trying to cope with her grief and go forward with her life while the “asleep” chapters show her what her future with Freddie may  have been. I loved the characters in the book and found  the author’s descriptions of grief to be very realistic. I also thought that the storyline was very interestingly plotted as Lydia travels between both of her lives.

Free eResources for FCPL Cardholders - Job and Career Resources

FCPL's Job and Career Resources can help patrons identify career matches, explore occupations, search for jobs and internships, view tools to get hired or explore the career library. Job and Career Accelerator offers helpful information in the Tools To Get Hired section like cover letter and resume building, interview tips, and interview follow up letter examples. My favorite tool is the career match which offers career matches by skills or interest.

Another great eResource for employment is the newspaper and magazines eResource, which includes links to Forsyth's local newspapers. Within the Forsyth Herald under classifieds, you can search for posted job openings. Within the Forsyth County News, if you select more, you will see a link to the Georgia Department of Labor online.

You can create an account with Employ Georgia which will allow you to search for hot jobs, job fairs, and other events. My favorite feature of Employ Georgia is the live stats of current Georgia jobs available and jobs added in Georgia on the previous day. For example, on April 20th there were 1,496 job postings added in the state of Georgia. Furthermore, as of April 21st, the total jobs available in Georgia were 116,763. ("Employ Georgia")

This is useful information for anyone in the state of Georgia looking for employment or interested in a career change. Happy Hunting!

Becoming by Michelle Obama

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama chronicles the experiences that have shaped her. From her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With honesty and wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it.

This book is not about politics, though it has political experiences. It is about growing up, first loves, passing the Bar exam, marriage, motherhood, and being in the amazing and terrifying position of First Lady. Listening to Michelle Obama read about her trials and tribulations out loud on the audio version, I couldn’t help but feel inspired.

This book is so vital. It isn’t afraid to shed truth on instances one would rather gloss over. It provided me with a new perspective to assess the world around me. I was definitely awestruck to listen to a memoir of this caliber. I recommend this to readers who are interested in Michelle Obama’s life and what truly goes into the role of a First Lady.

Using The Libby App to Access FCPL's Digital Library

The Libby app makes it easy to enjoy reading eBooks or listening to eAudiobooks from FCPL’s digital library. All you need is your library card and pin to start enjoying titles from popular authors like James Patterson, J.K. Rowling, David Baldacci, Mary Kay Andrews, Kevin Kwan, John Grisham, Kristin Hannah and many more.

All Forsyth County residents are eligible for a free library card. Register online or reset your PIN to get started.  Public school students in Forsyth County can even use their student ID number as their library card.  Online help is available through Ask a Librarian.

FCPL Locations Offer Free WiFi and Online Programs

Free WiFi internet access is now available from the parking lots of all four Forsyth County Public Library branches.

WiFi access is available each day from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Patrons using the WiFi service must observe social distancing by remaining inside their vehicles.

"As students return to online learning this week and the community has a heightened need for accessing information, libraries all across Georgia are reconfiguring their networks to provide WiFi in their parking lots," explains Library Director Anna Lyle.

Patrons who depend on the library for internet access should bear in mind that this is an open, unsecured connection and there is no passcode required. The connection is filtered and virtual private network (VPN) connections will not work.

“In addition to providing WiFi, our staff is currently filming and hosting online programs, such as storytimes and book clubs,” added Lyle.

A daily list of online activities is posted in the events calendar on the library’s website.

“We began distributing Online Storytime programs to patrons via email last month and since then we’ve added video yoga programs, web-based book club discussions for adults and teens, a Baby & Me video series for infants and their caregivers, and a weekly fun challenge for elementary-aged students and their families,” says Programming Manager Tracy Walker.

Most of FCPL’s online programs can be accessed via YouTube and Facebook Watch.

To access the book club meetings for adults and teens, patrons should register for the desired program on the events calendar and check their email for a link to join web-based conferences on GoToMeeting.

Patrons who wish to view Online Storytimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays should subscribe to the Online Storytime mailing list on the library’s website.

“We’re grateful to the publishers who are granting temporary permission for their books to be read online, and we are complying with their requests to refrain from posting our recordings publicly. Because of this, we’re sending links privately to our patrons so they can view our videos at their convenience,” explains Walker.

“Our patrons have been receptive to this temporary switch to online programming and we plan to offer other special programs, such as craft demonstrations and book talks, in the coming weeks,” adds Walker.

All library locations remain closed until further notice and in-person programming has also been suspended, but patrons may continue to check out electronic materials from the library’s website.

Patrons can even get personalized reading suggestions while the library is closed. Staff are receiving and responding to requests from kids, teens, and adults daily, says Deputy Director Stephen Kight.

“We really miss our patrons, but we encourage everyone in our community to stay at home, practice social distancing, and stay as healthy as possible. If patrons have questions about accessing library services from home, please use our Ask a Librarian service and our staff will respond as quickly as possible,” says Lyle.

The Ask a Librarian service can also be used to submit reference questions, general library account questions, and request help finding something to read.

Forsyth County residents who wish to register for a library card may do so online and get immediate access to the library's online services.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

The Night Circus follows Marco and Celia, young magicians who must battle each other in a game where they are pawns and agents, lovers and rivals. With elements of magical realism, romance, history, fantasy and suspense, the text meanders back and forth in time and place but never loses the mood. I especially recommend the audio version of The Night Circus. Narrated by the incomparable Jim Dale, his rich voice and nuanced reading is the perfect match for this book’s style which is a magical, dreamy delight of genre-blending.

Free eResources for FCPL Cardholders – Tutor.com

Need help with your schoolwork while you are home from school, but are unable to meet with a tutor?  Check out Tutor.com, a free tutoring service for students of all ages, available through the FCPL website's eLearning Page!  All you need is a library card!  Simply login with your library card number and PIN (Students who attend public school in Forsyth County can use their student ID number as their library barcode) and create a Tutor.com account. Then select a topic, subject, and grade, and connect with a tutor through live one-on-one chat! Live tutors are available from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.  

More than 3,000 expert tutors are available, and students can choose from more than 25 academic subjects.  While chatting, you can share files and a whiteboard with your tutor to go over examples and illustrations.  Tutors will work with you to solve problems and understand the subject matter.  All communication with a tutor is kept anonymous and confidential.  At the end of a session, you can save the work and notes for later review. And if you enjoyed working with the tutor, you can add them to your favorites!

There’s more to Tutor.com than live tutoring sessions. You can drop-off essays, resumes, and math assignments for review. Just upload an electronic copy of your work and an expert tutor will review and return it within 12-24 hours.

And the SkillsCenter Resource Library offers study and test preparation, such as SAT and ACT prep.  The SkillsCenter Resource Library also offers career resources for high school, college, and adult learners to explore!

Amy Whey is a diving instructor, wife, stepmother, and a new mother.  She revels in the simple pleasures of her ordinary life, but everything begins to unravel when Angelica Roux shows up on her doorstep and entices Amy’s book club group into playing a game of Never Have I Ever that causes everyone to start spilling secrets.  The game seems like harmless fun, but Amy knows that Roux has come for her.  A battle of wits ensues as Roux threatens to expose the dark secrets of Amy’s past and ruin her family and the life she has built if she doesn’t pay what Roux asks.

Free eResources for FCPL Cardholders – Learning Express Library

Do you need help with test preparation?  Look no further than your library’s website. FCPL offers Learning Express Library, a free online resource in the eResources section of FCPL's eLibrary.

Find it under Education and Test Preparation or in the Jobs and Careers section. Learning Express Library offers free tutorials and practice tests for the SAT, ACT, AP exams, and even the TOEFL iBT and IELTS tests.  But that’s not all!  It also includes test preparation for the GRE, the MCAT, and the LSAT; as well as for nursing, law enforcement, and many other degrees and certifications. Patrons can also prepare for the GED and other high school equivalency exams.

Students from 4th grade through college can brush up on their skills in all subjects, and high school and college students can prepare for the college placement exams.  College graduates and those looking for a career change can investigate career matching and other resources to enhance their careers. There are even resources for adults wishing to improve their math, writing, or grammar skills. There is something for everyone in this resource!

Once you are in the database, simply create a Learning Express Library account to access the tutorials and practice tests. Use your Forsyth County Library barcode or username and the PIN you chose when you signed up for your library card. It is a four-digit or more number that you chose and you are allowed ten tries to get it right. To reset a forgotten pin, click on the my account tab and then, Forgot your Pin?  Students who attend public school in Forsyth County can use their student ID number as their library barcode. Help is available through Ask a Librarian.

Did you know FPCL’s digital library contains thousands of audiobooks for patrons to download and listen to on their personal devices?

It’s easy to create free accounts in RBDigital and OverDrive.  All you need is your library card and PIN.

Browse genres in RBDigital or search by collection in OverDrive.  Listen to a preview to find one you like. You can place holds for waitlisted titles like Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, or search for items with immediate availability using Filter by Availability in RB Digital or Available Now in OverDrive.

Both eAudiobook formats offer titles for adults and juveniles. Fans of our most popular juvenile series can enjoy listening to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Magic Tree House books from their smartphone or other devices.        

The Libby app offers step-by-step instructions to help patrons utilize the library's digital collection.

All Forsyth County residents can register for a free library card online. Students in Forsyth County Public Schools can even use their student id number as their library card. Existing cardholders can reset forgotten PIN numbers here.
