Watching You Without Me by Lynn Coady

In this dramatic thriller, Karen returns to her childhood home in Nova Scotia after her mother's death to handle her affairs and manage the care of her developmentally-disabled older sister, Kelli. Taking on a caregiver role was not something Karen had planned on or wanted to do. In fact, she and her mother, Irene, had a big argument years earlier because Irene insisted on keeping Kelli at home and caring for her there, rather than sending her to an institution.

Luckily (or maybe not), one of Kelli's caregivers, Trevor, steps in to help. Officially, Trevor's job is to accompany Kelli on a walk twice a week. As Karen gets overwhelmed with her caregiving duties, Trevor starts taking on more responsibilities. However, he also keeps coming by unannounced and using his key to get into the house. Pretty soon, Trevor's help starts to feel manipulative and he's also adamant that he knows what's best for everyone involved.

FCPL to Host an Evening with Jeff Shaara, Bestselling Author of Gods and Generals

Jeff Shaara, author of Gods and Generals, will visit Cumming to speak and sign new books purchased at the event at Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd., at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022. 

An Evening with Jeff Shaara is one of several events hosted by the Forsyth County Public Library (FCPL) as part of Forsyth Reads Together, a community reading program sponsored by Forsyth County Public Library, FCPL Friends and Advocates, and the Forsyth County Arts Alliance at the Forsyth County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the North Georgia Community Foundation.

Admission to the event is free, but advance registration on the library’s website is requested.

FCPL Reads 2022 - February Goal

Are you working towards your goals for FCPL Reads 2022? Here's the second reading goal to inspire you to Read Something New (to You!) in 2022!

The reading goal for February is to read a book by a Black author in honor of Black History Month.

CrafterNoon: An Adult Craft Program

CrafterNoon is a craft program for adults to come learn how to make a new craft and have fun chatting with other crafters. For January, February, and March, we are exploring the color wheel and even learning some color theory through different painting techniques.

Join us on Friday, February 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Cumming Library to try a method of painting that is a little different: tissue paper painting! Using water and a type of tissue paper that "bleeds," we will learn how to read the color wheel, figure out the difference between monochromatic and analogous colors, and create bookmarks and cards using nothing more than tissue paper and water.

CrafterNoon meets on the second Friday of each month at the Cumming Library and is intended for adults only. Registration is required as supplies are limited. Register today for our February CrafterNoon!

Staff Picks: The Prince of the Skies by Antonio Iturbe

The Prince of the Skies by Antonio Iturbe

This is a superb fictionalization of the life of Antoine de Saint-Exupery! The novel chronicles his life from a young child enamored with the dream of flying, his first love that haunts him, and the rise of the aviation industry. Saint Ex, as he was often referred to, along with Jean Mermoz and Henri Guillaumet, were among the aviators exiting World War I with a passion to make aviation viable as a business. They worked together delivering mail between European countries and expanding into Africa and South America. There are harrowing mishaps, emergency landings in the sea and desert, and often fatal incidents among these brave aviators of the time.

You might recognize Antoine de Saint-Exupery as the author of such titles as The Little Prince and Wind, Sand, and Stars, which won the National Book Award.

Celebrate Black History Month at FCPL

Forsyth County Public Library (FCPL) will celebrate Black culture through a series of free educational programs at all four libraries this month. 

Gnimbin Ouattara, Ph.D., will return to FCPL to present “The Origins of the Black Family in America” on Thursday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Post Road Library. Dr. Ouattara is a filmmaker, a Fulbright scholar, and Associate Professor of History and International Studies at Brenau University. His presentation this year covers the historical and cultural implications that have led to how the Black family exists in America today.

“We’re thrilled to welcome back Dr. Ouattara. He has never failed to enthrall our patrons with whatever he has been working on. He has presented on topics ranging from the transatlantic slave trade to what the Harlem Renaissance could teach us about the COVID-19 pandemic. His information is always fresh and fascinating,” says Information Services Supervisor Kim Ottesen.
