Award-winning author McCall Hoyle will talk with readers and aspiring authors in a free writing workshop on Sunday, December 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hampton Park Library.
During her visit, Hoyle will sign copies of her book The Thing with Feathers and share how she went from dreaming about writing, to securing a literary agent, and on to publishing her novel for young adults with Blink/HarperCollins earlier this fall.
Hoyle’s book tackles issues of illness and young adult romance as Emilie, a high school student with epilepsy, enrolls in public school for the first time and must learn to navigate classes, cliques, and crushes while keeping her illness a secret.
“As a high school English teacher, McCall Hoyle has first-hand knowledge of the struggles teens face with insecurity, relationships, and overcoming fears. That knowledge, coupled with her own experience as a teen, helped shape the novel’s characters and we’re looking forward to hearing her advice,” says Ross Gericke, branch manager at the Hampton Park Library.
Hoyle will take questions from participants about writing methods, style, character development, and navigating the world of publishing during the library’s workshop.
“Our goal for this workshop is to give aspiring authors additional strategies for improving their writing and to motivate them to finish their own novels,” explains Gericke.
Hoyle’s workshop is intended for adults, but teens ages 16 and up are welcome, as well. Advance registration is not required. A book signing will follow Hoyle’s talk and participants may bring their own copies of The Thing with Feathers or purchase one at the workshop.
