OverBOOKed to Read: The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey

The Widows of Malabar Hill
, the first book in Sujata Massey's Perveen Mistry series, transports you to another time, another place, and another culture. Set in Bombay in 1921, Perveen Mistry is the daughter of a respected Zoroastrian family and one of the first female lawyers in India.

Perveen's father's law firm, Mistry Law, is handling the will of a wealthy Muslim mill owner who has left three widows behind. The widows live in strict seclusion, called "purdah," and never leave the women's quarter of their house or speak to any men. While going through the paperwork, Perveen notices that all three have signed over their inheritance to a charity, leaving nothing for them to live on.

Suspicious that someone is taking advantage of the widows, and as the only lawyer who can speak to the women in person, Perveen decides to investigate. What she finds increases the confusion around the mill owner's will, especially when someone in the women's household is murdered.

Don't forget that our FCPL Reads 2022 reading challenge for April is to read a book set in a different country. Immerse yourself in the culture of 1921 Bombay with this engaging mystery.
