Staff Picks: The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd by Josie Silver

The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd by Josie Silver

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did since it's not the type of book I typically read; however I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

In the beginning of the novel, Lydia’s fiancĂ©, childhood sweetheart and love of her life, Freddie, is killed in a car accident on Lydia’s birthday. In her grief, Lydia’s mother procures her a bottle of a trial version of sleeping pills. Lydia soon learns that after she takes one of the sleeping pills, she is transported into a world where Freddie is still alive.

The book alternates between “awake” chapters and “asleep” chapters. The “awake”  chapters portray Lydia trying to cope with her grief and go forward with her life while the “asleep” chapters show her what her future with Freddie may  have been. I loved the characters in the book and found  the author’s descriptions of grief to be very realistic. I also thought that the storyline was very interestingly plotted as Lydia travels between both of her lives.

The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd is available from FCPL's digital catalog as an eBook and eAudiobook. The Libby app offers step by step instructions on accessing ebooks from FCPL.
