When You Read This by Mary Adkins
This story is told exclusively using emails, text messages, blog posts, and drawings. At nearly 400 pages, it looks long, but the epistolary nature of the book and the lively characters make this a quick read.
This is a story about dying and grief and it is also very funny. If you don’t mind laughing through your tears as you read along, you will love this book.
Read it for Carl, the bumbling intern, who does way more than he is ever asked to with disastrously hilarious results. Read it for Iris’s touching blog posts about her struggle to embrace her impending death, “The whole time I thought my real life hadn’t started yet. Turns out that was my life.” Read it to learn how Jade, Iris’s sister, works through her grief with the help of Iris’s former boss, Smith. Both of them are flawed characters, as we all are, and are doing their best to work through their heartache.
