Novel Realities Book Discussion The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno Garcia

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a new spin on the H.G. Wells classic novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. We will discuss The Daughter of Doctor Moreau at the next Novel Realities book discussion group at the Sharon Forks Library on Thursday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m.

The story takes place in 19th century Mexico, specifically on the Yucatán peninsula, an area so remote that it was often referred to as an island. There we find Carlota Moreau, the young, dutiful daughter of the doctor who spends his time creating animal-human hybrids to further his scientific pursuits.

Carlota has spent her whole life in Yaxaktun, a ranch in northern Yucatán. Carlota loves Yaxaktun and the hybrids that her father has created in his bizarre experiments. Carlota also loves her father and has done everything she can to be the meek and obedient daughter he expects.

Additionally, there is Hernando Lizalde, Dr. Moreau’s patron, who funds the doctor’s laboratory in hopes that he’ll eventually create hybrids that are fit to work on his haciendas. On one of Lizalde's visits to the ranch, he brings along Montgomery, a self-loathing, hard-drinking English hunter whom Dr. Moreau hires as a mayordomo, an overseer of the property and its hybrids. After six years of relative peace, things begin to take a turn.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia deftly combines science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and even romance in her latest work. The novel’s buildup to the action-packed conclusion is definitely worth reading.
