Dino Art Giveaway!

This summer, paleoartist Daniel Eskridge displayed his artwork at the Denmark Library, perfectly complementing our dinosaur theme. He also presented a program explaining paleoart and how artists collaborate with scientists. Following this, he generously offered to share his work with Forsyth County Public Library patrons.

Beginning Friday, July 24, each branch will offer patrons a chance to win a stretched canvas of one of Daniel’s pieces. Every time a patron visits a library branch, they can enter the drawing for the specific artwork displayed at that location. Winners will be notified on August 6.

Bookworm Garden Level-Up at the Denmark Library

As we rounded our first year at Denmark Library, the youth team felt like we were missing an opportunity to fully utilize the outside spaces. We wanted to shift the focus back towards the educational intent behind the space’s design. In other words, it was time for a Bookworm Garden level–up! 

Our solution? Learning stations. 

Each month, we will rotate through three different types of activities:

Building Activity

This could be anything from blocks, giant magna tiles, or (my personal favorite) giant Lincoln logs. 

Magnetic Board

Our brand new magnetic board is brilliant and lets us do letter activities, magnetic ramp ball mazes, and gears. 

 

Pretend Play

We have lots of options for pretend play activities, including a fake grill and a washing machine complete with clothes to fold! 

 

These activities are meant to be fun educational opportunities first and foremost. We have designed instruction sheets for parents to learn how to use these activities as a collaborative learning experience. For example, our sandwich shop pretend play is an opportunity to learn how to sort, sequence, brainstorm, and more. This exemplifies just how important pretend play is for education!

Denmark Library Has Gone to the Birds

We’ve got some caw-some news that we are raven about at Denmark Library! 

If you’ve been to Denmark Library you may have noticed or been heron about our bird feeder located in the adult area just outside the windows. After a few months of having it up, we have gained quite a faithful flock of visitors. A whooping amount of feeder birds such as wrens, cardinals, and blue birds have been visiting round the clock. In the sky you can catch a flicker of a turkey vulture or Cooper’s hawk. You may even spot a murder... of crows.

One of our frequent visitors, a male Brown-headed Cowbird. Did you know the Brown-headed Cowbird is North America’s most common “brood parasite.” A female cowbird makes no nest of her own, but instead lays her eggs in the nests of other bird species, who then raise the young cowbirds.

To help keep track of our feathery friends, a bird observation log is provided for everyone to fill out their observations at the bird feeder or anywhere on the library’s grounds. If you spot a bird, simply fill out the log with the date & time, weather, what bird you observed and its location, and any identifying information about the bird. Toucan even make it into a family event by checking out Georgia State Parks backpack, which contains binoculars and a bird ID guide book, and walking around the library grounds looking for birds with your brood.

Our bird watch log is available now! Peep the pine warbler on the feeder. They are another common feeder bird we see at Denmark.

To provide our quail-ity contributions to citizen science, the Denmark Library will be sharing these observations on our eBird page. For those unfamiliar with it, eBird is a global online database of bird observations and a citizen science project launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. It provides scientists, researchers, and naturalists with real-time data on bird distribution and abundance. Participation is free and you must create a free account to view findings and log your own.

We are piping with egg-citement about this project! Be sure to visit us swift-ly or you’ll egret it! (We apologize for the fowl language but we couldn’t help owl-selves.)

Denmark Library: A Year in Review

On March 27, we will be celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of Denmark Library. It’s hard to believe a year has already passed! Take a look at some of our favorite moments over the past year.

But my all-time favorite comes down to one of these two, both from before I was even an employee: first, the beautiful spring day on which we first heard from the school intercom that our neighbor was opening its doors for the first time, when all of us students got to finally explore the masterpiece we'd been watching assemble next to us over the past three years (I'll never forget literally jumping out of my seat as this sneak announcement surprised me in the morning briefing); and, second, the chance connection made with a fabulous juggler who came to perform during our first summer reading, which ended in my receiving an unexpected gift of exceptional comics bounty (ain't being a VolunTEEN great??). Staff Art Exhibit at Denmark Library

One exciting feature about the Denmark Library that not many people know about is our hanging gallery wall system along the walls to the Meeting Rooms. To showcase this feature, staff have submitted various artworks to be displayed along the walls. Mediums of pieces submitted include acrylic and oil paintings, photography, and fiber arts.

The Denmark Library would like to thank all of the talented staff members that contributed their work to our inaugural art exhibition. Your wonderful talents have made our branch brighter!

The exhibit will be available to view through Friday, March 6 so drop by and see it while you can!

• Early Childhood: Caregivers and their little ones can enjoy bonding time during Books & Babies and Toddler Tales. For more hands-on engagement, the Preschool Learning Lab and Family Fun Fridays offer creative play and STEM activities.
  
  
• Students and Teens: Elementary-aged children can embark on a choose-your-own-adventure with the Organ Trail, while teenagers can engage in Puzzle Madness or design their own Keychains.

Introducing: BYO Book: Dialogues at Denmark

 

With a new library comes new and exciting programs! The Denmark Library is hosting a new program series called “BYO Book: Dialogues at Denmark”. The group meets once a month on Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

Unlike other book clubs, BYO Book meets to discuss a chosen topic instead of a single book title. This program is ideal for those who love reading, but reading is never a requirement! If you like learning about new subjects and are interested in getting new book recommendations then this is the place for you too.
